There are many different types of corneal transplants. Depending on the condition being treated, there are different methods and different transplants that can be used. Donor tissue comes from a cadaver, and corneal transplants are some of the most successful surgeries within the human body.
However, after the corneal tranplant has healed, often times, patients are left with an irregular surface. This irregular surface causes major visual issues. Many transplant patients cannot see clearly through the eye which received the transplant, even with the best glasses.
There is hope! Specialty contact lenses can be fit to most corneal transplants to provide functional vision. This is not a regular contact lens – this lens is custom fit to the patient’s eye, and many eye doctors do not fit this type of lens. Dr. Woo is residency trained in cornea and contact lenses, and she is highly skilled to fit patients who have undergone corneal transplants.
